About the Project

The Texas Hearing Institute (formerly known as The Center for Hearing and Speech) is the only full-service resource in Houston to assist children with hearing issues to listen and speak without the use of sign language. The Institute offers both clinical and educational services. The educational side focuses on teaching children between the ages of 18 months to 6 years with hearing loss to accelerate their development of spoken language and to prepare them to enter the public school system. The clinic side provides both audiology and speech services.

The project started with the abatement and demolition of the former DeBakey High School located on the SE corner of 288 and McGregor (Tellepsen completed construction of the new DeBakey HS in 2018).

The new Texas Hearing Institute (THI) building is a 49,000 SF, single story campus consisting of administrative offices, audiology clinics, speech clinics, and an educational wing. There is also a partnership with Texas Children’s Hospital which has a 2,500 SF clinic within the THI building providing additional services to the community. THI has eight sound booths within the building and TCH has one, making this the largest concentration of sound booths in one facility in the United States.
